Getting Match Fit for Conversations

We all have issues to resolve. Challenges to transform, conflicts to sort out, differences of opinion to clarify. And we all have problems that call for - or demand - a way forward.

Just like your to-do list, managing critical conversations and relationships never really goes away.

Yet, as humans we also crave belonging. We’d rather not rock the boat. We tiptoe around tension, being careful not to upset anyone.

And then there’s that small but volatile toxic minority - people who lose it when you raise a critical issue. We know the type: precious, self-indulgent, manipulative, or simply lacking any real insight - especially into their own poor behaviour.

So, we avoid conflict. Not just with them - but with everyone!

So, imagine this instead…

You’ve booked the catch-up.
Done the preparation.
Rehearsed aloud.

You’re clear and specific about the real issue. You can articulate the impact that their behaviour is having. There’s a tangible solution - and you’re talking through the consequences if nothing changes.

And then, something quite remarkable happens.

They respond - not perfectly, but reasonably. They listen. They stay with the issue, and they stay in the conversation.

They even apologise!

Both of you land on an actionable outcome that isn’t about compromise or consensus, but instead a genuine, agreed Call To Action.

It’s a decision that serves the greater good. One that delivers better service to your clients - because in the end, serving the client trumps everything.

You even lock in a review date. And you commit to some fine-tuning, if needed. Then you both celebrate the positive progress that has been made.

No - this is not a fantasy. It’s entirely possible.

It’s not just about being confident. It’s about being competent.

It’s a critical skill set. One that we can learn. And one that we can teach. It’s a place where we can collectively practise together… until it becomes part of our culture.

One conversation. One practice session. One step at a time.

Wishing you a great week of gaining your extra match fitness!
