Getting Stuff Done, But Only The Right Stuff

Being Tired Isn’t The Problem. Being Tired For Nothing Is.

We’re paid to get stuff done.

Work gets intense. Deadlines collide. Problems appear. People need things now. Something urgent can become a crisis in the blink of an eye. That’s reality!

Often, a genuinely productive week will leave you spent. But there are two very different kinds of spent:

“What the hell happened? I’m exhausted.”

And:

“What a massive week. I’m ‘good tired’ - look at what we achieved.”

One is busyness. The other is meaningful progress.

That’s why I think that we need to rethink our strange obsession with being busy.

Ask someone how they are and one of the most common answers… “Busy.” Many say it almost proudly, as if a full calendar, overflowing inbox and constant sense of urgency are proof that we are important, being productive and doing a great job.

Busyness is not the same as effectiveness. And, it’s certainly not a badge of honour.

In fact, being constantly busy is a red flag. It means that we’ve lost sight of what really matters. We’re reacting instead of choosing. Our attention is being dragged in ten different directions. And our best energy is spent on whatever happens to be shouting the loudest.

Modern digital work makes that happen incredibly easily. Emails. Meetings. Notifications. Tasks. Multiple tabs open. Another thing that suddenly feels urgent. You can spend an entire day doing things and still wonder, “What did I actually achieve?”

That’s the Busyness Myth.

The challenge isn’t getting more stuff done. Most of us are already doing plenty. The challenge is getting the right stuff done.

That means being very clear about what you’re there to achieve. What are the outcomes that matter? What work genuinely moves things forward? What deserves your best thinking, energy and attention?

Because if everything is important… then nothing is!

It also means taking some responsibility for our own distraction.

For many of us, distraction has become a habit. We check the inbox without thinking. We reach for the phone the second there’s a quiet moment. We jump between tasks because sometimes being busy feels easier than doing the deeper, harder work.

Focus has become a genuine workplace superpower. Being fully present in a conversation. Finishing one important task before opening another. Protecting time for work that matters. Saying no, not now, or not me. Otherwise, it just adds noise, steals focus or simply doesn’t deserve your attention.

Perhaps we even need to create a “To Don’t List.”

Sometimes becoming more productive isn’t about doing more. It’s about being much more deliberate about what you do.

So, at the end of this week, I hope that you are tired. But I also hope that it’s the good kind of tired. The kind where you can look back and say:

“That was a big week. But we got some really important stuff done!”

Wishing you a wonderful week of getting great work done.
