Don’t Be Afraid To Let Things Out!

I am a great believer in being positive and having and promoting HOPE, it is the only way that we get through life and move forward. But sometimes we need to give ourselves a break and just let things out.

Since coming back from overseas in early March and going straight into home quarantine, which I thought was for only 2 weeks, the reality is that there has only been a 3-week period since then when myself and all other Victorians have not been in lockdown and it is now starting to take a toll on the physical and mental wellbeing of people.

I am blessed to be a father of 4 children and a grandfather of 7, with number 8 only two weeks away. Not being able to see them and hold them is devastating. Not being able to meet with friends or associate with my colleagues and clients is difficult and even knowing that it is the right thing to do, does not ease the pain.

So, before I get back onto my soapbox of Positivity and HOPE, I just wanted to have this moment of self-indulgence and tell you how I am feeling. I know that I speak for many others as well.

But we do have to be positive, because this horrible situation will come to an end and we will be OK again. But can I say one thing – don’t become a hermit. Reach out to friends, family, colleagues and whoever you can. Keep the conversations and connections going in any way you can, because to get through this we need each other.

Also, be careful that we don’t blame and become bitter and cynical because that is what will harm our mental health more than anything.

It’s OK to have a purge, in fact it is healing, but don’t stay within the pain for too long.

I know the statement has been thrown around a lot, but the reality is that we are all in this together and we need each other now more than ever.

So, my challenge is to get all of us to reach out to three people this week who we have not had regular contact with and simply ask them - are you OK?

It could make all of the difference to them and to you.
